Abstract

Introduction: Magnesium is a main cofactor for various enzymatic reactions. Hypomagnesaemia may increase insulin resistance. Magnesium can affect the release and activity of insulin and also plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism.

Objective :To evaluate the serum magnesium levels in type 2 diabetes patients and its association with lipid profile and BMI

Materials & Methods: This is a case control study and the sample size is 50 (25 cases and 25 controls). The fasting lipid profile, BMI and serum magnesium levels are measured and compared with SPSS 16 software between cases and controls.

Results : The serum magnesium levels are significantly lower in cases when compared to controls (P<0.001) and total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol are significantly higher in cases (P<0.001). There is very highly significant (P<0.001) correlation between the diabetic status and low serum magnesium levels.

Conclusion :The type 2 diabetics are overweight and are having low magnesium levels which are risk factors for various other diseases and the prompt treatment is must to ensure prolonged healthy life.

Key words :Basal Metabolic rate, Cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, Insulin resistance, Magnesium.
