Abstract

Introduction: Lichenoid eruptions are seen commonly in dermatological practice. They belong to a diverse group of skin conditions that resemble idiopathic lichen planus in terms of their clinical appearance and histologically demonstrate a lichenoid tissue reaction (LTR). . The latter is a pattern characterized by alteration of epidermal basal cells, dense band of lymphocytes that abut the dermo-epidermal junction and obscures the interface. In contrast to this, the term lichenoid dermatoses (LD) is used for several clinically distinct inflammatory skin disorders having common histological features consistent with LTR.
Materials & Methods: The study comprised of 100 consecutive patients of either sex diagnosed provisionally as lichenoid dermatoses on clinical grounds, who have reported to the outpatient department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology during the period of April 2010 to June 2011 constituted the subject material for the present study.
Results:In the present study, the clinico-histological features of LD have been studied in 100 patients. Nine clinically distinct types of LD were noted in our study. Among these, Lichen Planus (LP) (59%) was the most common type observed.
Conclusion: The present study analyzing the clinico-histological aspects of one hundred patients with lichenoid dermatoses (LD) support the prevailing concept that they represent a group of clinically distinct inflammatory skin disorders manifesting morphologically with chronic lichenoid eruptions and histological features consistent with LTR / interface dermatitis
